Frequently asked questions

  • At the initial consultation, we’ll discuss your child’s case history, your best hopes and what you would like to achieve. We will observe and play with your child, using a mix of formal and informal assessments. For younger children, this will often feel like play.

After the assessment, we’ll review our findings with you and discuss next steps. This could include starting therapy, arranging a review session in a few months, or liaising with your child’s school or nursery.

    • Working and playing with you and your child

    • Coaching for parents on strategies and activities

    • Discussion of progress and home learning ideas

    • Therapy sessions can be online, in one of our clinics or in your child’s educational school or nursery.

    • Planning and preparing materials

    • Feedback to families or schools

    • Email communication and liaison

    • Writing clinical notes in line with HCPC requirements

  • Sessions are usually 30 or 45 minutes, depending on your child’s targets and concentration. Your therapist will advise the best option at the initial consultation.

  • Every child progresses at their own pace. Some show quick improvements, while others take longer. We’ll discuss your child’s likely pattern of progress.

  • We encourage parent or carer attendance wherever possible, as it helps skills generalise. If it’s better for your child to have solo therapy time, we provide feedback and home practice guidance at the end of the session.

  • Yes. Early intervention is key to supporting speech, language, and communication development.

Due to NHS waiting lists, early treatment isn’t always possible. At So to Speak, there is no waiting list, and we can work at times and in locations that suit your needs.

You can access private therapy while on an NHS waiting list or alongside NHS treatment – private therapy does not affect your NHS entitlement.

  • Please see pricing above.

  • We understand that things happen and children can get ill. You can rearrange a session free of charge if you cancel up to the day before. Sessions cancelled on the day, or missed without notice, are charged in full.
